Breakthrough Silicon Valley

About Breakthrough Silicon Valley

Starting in middle school, Breakthrough Silicon Valley launches talented students who have been historically excluded from higher education on the path to college and inspires high school and college students to become the next generation of leaders, advocates, and educators. While ambitious in our goals, BTSV works: a stunning 99% of BTSV graduates attend college immediately after high school, and 78% of BTSV Teaching Fellows are inspired to pursue a career related to education as a result of their BTSV experience.

BTSV’s tuition-free program provides year-round out-of-school-time academic support, counseling, and advocacy for a diverse group of talented students, most of whom come from under-resourced communities and will be the first generation in their families to go to college. Through our students-teaching-students model, BTSV also provides a consummate professional development experience providing talented high school and college students the opportunity to understand the K-12 system and the drivers of educational inequities, and to design and teach classes under the direction of seasoned educators.

Located in San Jose, California, Breakthrough Silicon Valley is an affiliate of The Breakthrough Collaborative, a leading national service organization that acts as the national voice for 24 Breakthrough sites across the country.

“- Instructional coach will provide lots of great feedback to help improve your teaching skills - Strong community with other teaching fellows - It was like summer camp + summer school combined, lots of fun activities in addition to academic learning - I had the opportunity to teach my own elective course on culture and food! - Working with the students and seeing their growth was the best, most memorable part! ”

“In short, the students (rising 7th and 8th graders) are the highlight. Beyond acting as a lead (solo) teacher for 2 core classes and an elective, teaching fellows also co-lead a "crew" of 10 students during extracurricular periods such as brunch, all-school meeting, lunch, and study hall. Getting to know the students alongside teaching them was incredible. One student comes to mind: he was in my "crew" as well as my debate elective, and I noticed that while he was a leader in crew, he was often shy and removed in class. I used my personal relationship with him to encourage him and talk things out, and after the first debate he was shocked by how much fun he had and how supportive everyone was—he even promised to join his school's debate teams. It's stories like this that demonstrate how immersive, hopeful, and inspiring the Breakthrough experience is.”
