Job Summary
The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting for an Independent Study Assistant for the Juvenile Court and Community Schools Department of the Student Services and Programs Division. Under the general supervision of a school administrator, assists in providing clerical and instructional support to teachers and students in independent study instructional settings; provides instructional support to individual or small groups of students in assigned subject-matter areas to reinforce assigned lessons; assist teachers in the supervision of individual or groups of students and perform a variety of related duties in the maintenance of an effective learning environment. This position is part-time and will offer the classified benefits package, which includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, and will participate in the CalPERS state retirement system. The current vacancy is located in North Region Juvenile Court and Community Schools and based out of North County Tech Academy. However, this position will require travel to sites throughout North County.
Requirements / Qualifications
This position requires possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent) and at least one year of experience (paid or volunteer) working with youth in an organized setting, ideally with at-risk youth.
Candidates must also demonstrate Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, previously referred to as the NCLB Act) compliance. In order to satisfy the paraprofessional requirements of the ESSA, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND one of the following:
- Completed at least 48-semester units at an accredited college or university; OR,
- Obtained an associates (or higher) degree; OR,
- Successful completion of an assessment, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills, and the ability to assist with instruction.
A valid California driver's license may be required for some assignments.

- If you do not currently meet the ESSA requirements listed above, you will be required to participate in the SDCOE Paraprofessional Assessment.
The results of this recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list to fill the current vacancy and any other vacancies in this classification for the next six (6) months, or until the list is exhausted.
