Civil Engineering Intern

Civil Engineering Intern for summer of 2026

The City of Louisville is accepting applications for our 2026 Summer Civil Engineer Internship!
 
The Summer Engineering Intern will work under general supervision of the Assistant City Engineer. The Summer Engineering Intern will perform office and field engineering work involved with the planning, design, and inspection of public improvement projects.  Work assignments are made both orally and in writing.  Work is performed under supervision and is regularly reviewed through observation, conferences, periodic inspection, and for results obtained.  Performs other work as assigned.
 
This seasonal position will be offered at 40 hours per week starting in May and ending in the Fall.

 

Examples of Duties:

 

  • Assists City Engineers and Construction Inspector with City of Louisville engineering projects
  • Performs construction inspections for development and capital improvement projects, provides engineering information to the public, contractors, engineers, etc.
  • Prepares graphical design and layout 
  • Assists with drafting duties and produces drawings and sketches for engineering staff and other departments
  • Researches property titles and rights-of-way easements using map files and other sources
  • Performs engineering calculations, assists with preparation of engineering plans, performs minor surveying tasks and GIS Mapping (data input)
  • Performs routine engineering office work, including updating and filing records, photocopying records, documents, and other engineering drawings.
  • Other duties as assigned

General Qualifications:

  • College course work in civil engineering and computer aided drafting (CAD), surveying, 
  • Any experience with concrete, paving, or construction is preferred
  • Experience in developing spreadsheets and databases (Excel, Access, etc.) is important
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Any equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience may be considered
