Metrologist

 

Gemological Institute of America, Inc. (GIA) seeks a Metrologist in Carlsbad, CA.

 

Job duties: Collaborates with R&D teams to enhance existing measuring instruments or develop new ones, acting as a technical liaison between research and production operations. Applies advanced mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles – including geochemistry, mineralogy, measurement science, physics, and engineering – to design analytical methods, perform precise calibrations, and resolve complex measurement challenges. Develops, evaluates, and implements test and measurement procedures; selects appropriate calibration standards and test equipment based on technical requirements. Uses statistical methods to analyze measurement data, assess instrument performance, and optimize processes.

Maintains and manages calibration and quality management systems, including documentation, compliance with domestic and international standards, and coordination across multiple sites. Operates, calibrates, maintains, and troubleshoots complex laboratory instruments, including microbalances, 3-D non-contact measuring devices, color analysis instruments, various imaging systems, and spectral analysis instruments. Performs corrective actions, repairs, and preventive maintenance to ensure reliable operation of analytical equipment and uninterrupted workflows. Keeps current with emerging technologies, measurement methods, and industry best practices, recommending and implementing improvements as appropriate.

Travels domestically and internationally as required to support laboratory operations and equipment calibration. Communicates effectively with colleagues, management, and cross-functional teams, exercising professional judgment under pressure. 10% domestic and international travel. Employer covers travel expenses.

 

Minimum Requirements: 

Master's degree or foreign degree equivalent in Geoscience, Earth Science, Physics, or related field. Two (2) years of experience in the job offered or related occupation to include experience with laboratory measurement, calibration, or instrumentation development.

 

Must also possess all of the following:

  • At least two (2) years of experience designing and developing analytical test methods and measurement procedures, including use of calibration standards and test equipment. 
  • Experience with using 3D non-contact measurement systems, color and imaging instruments, and spectral analysis tools to interpret data and evaluate system performance.
  • Experience performing statistical analysis of measurement data to evaluate instrument performance, measurement variation, and system stability.
  • Experience managing calibration and quality management systems, maintaining documentation, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
  • Experience preparing technical findings and collaborating with cross-functional teams, including R&D, quality, and other stakeholders. 

Any and all experience may be gained concurrently.

 

Salary: $88,296.00-$99,060.00 Work Location: 5345 Armada Drive, Carlsbad, CA 92008.
