Cyber Security Analyst - Facilitated Internship

Internship Description 


We are looking for an enthusiastic Cyber Security Analyst intern to join our Information Security Operations & Engineering department and provide creative ideas to help achieve our goals. You will have administrative duties in developing and implementing next-generation cyber security controls. As a Cyber Security Analyst intern, you will collaborate with multiple departments within Business Technology Services to include Infrastructure and Applications teams in all aspects of cyber security access, architecture, and control implementation. Your insightful contribution will help develop, expand, and maintain a safe working environment for all PNMR staff and employees. This internship will help you acquire essential skills in the field of cyber security and provide you with knowledge of various technologies which include firewall, endpoint protection, SIEM, incident response, and much more. Ultimately, you will gain broad experience in security operations centers and should be prepared to enter any security related work environment. 


Intern Job Responsibilities: 


  • Triage and investigate security events related to endpoint, infrastructure, and network 
  • Monitor and investigate anomalies in security tools while using SIEM  
  • Review system logs, alerts, and other data sources to identify, investigate, report any possible cybersecurity incidents, or discovered vulnerabilities 
  • Deliver and promote an education, training, communication, and anti-phishing program for employees to raise cybersecurity awareness across the organization  
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to address and identify high-risk areas and support business-critical projects and key initiatives 
  • Assist with remediation effort, fixing all deficiencies found during investigations 
  • Implement and operate effective access controls that protect against threats, support business objectives, and increase security 
  • Support mid and senior level team members as needed 


Work Hours & Benefits  


Flexible hours are available within the work week of Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Internship opportunities are available throughout the summer and fall semesters. You will be working primarily with an assigned Mentor and will benefit from a 1:1 mentor to mentee/intern ratio. 


Intern Qualifications / Skills: 


  • Outstanding verbal and written communication 
  • Meticulous organizational abilities 
  • A strong desire to learn and research security threats and alerts 
  • Well established customer service skills 
  • Diligent professionalism 
  • Adherence to confidentiality and privacy of all employees 
  • Familiarity with common attacks and techniques-such as credential phishing, Denial of Service, malware, ransomware, network/web/email spoofing, and social engineering 


Education, Experience, and Job Requirements: 


  • Minimum Experience required: One year of work experience in engineering related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Preferred Experience: Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university in computer science or educationally equivalent engineering field.  
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and ability to learn and use institutional software systems such as SIEM tools such as Splunk, Vulnerability scanning tools such as Tenable Nessus, network cybersecurity topics such as firewalls/web application firewalls, IDS/IPS, DNS security, data loss prevention, encryption, etc. 
  • Must sign a Non –Disclosure Agreement (NDA) 
  • Must have a Background Check 
  • Must have a Drug and Alcohol test
