Student Trainee (CBP Technician)

Duties

The Pathways Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent position in the civil service. This position starts at a salary of $32,079.00 (GS-03, Step 1) to $46,808.00 (GS-04, Step 10).

In this Student Trainee (CBP Technician) position, you will strengthen the Department's ability to protect the homeland by becoming a valuable member of a team of professionals. Typical work assignments include:

  • Assists the CBP Officers and/or CBP Agriculture Specialists with conveyances, cargo, passenger, and baggage, interdictions activities, and screening packages in mail and express consignment facilities, and miscellaneous articles.
  • Supports the inspection of vessels and aircraft for restricted or prohibited commodities, by-products, contaminates and pests that are potentially dangerous to the nation's agriculture.
  • Coordinates or enters information into automated systems; works closely with an assigned supervisor to reconcile accounts and resolve errors on collection documents; review and corrects error reports.
  • Performing routine clerical duties and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

You must be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or who is currently enrolled and seeking a degree, diploma or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis (half-time is defined by the educational institution in which the student is enrolled).

AND:

GS-03: Completion of one (1) academic year of post-high school study. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

GS-04: Completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree. Two years of full-time academic study is defined as 60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university.

You may also substitute successful completion of one year of full-time graduate education for the experience required at the GS-7 level. This education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university and demonstrate the skills necessary to do the work of the position. A course of study in business administration, public administration, or related fields is qualifying. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise a year of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 18 semester or 27 quarter hours
