Lead Traffic Control Technician

ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Lead Traffic Control Technician position at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility, leads and performs design, repair, removal, and installation of street signs.

 

Work is performed under the supervision of the Traffic Engineering Technician Supervisor. This position leads and instructs the daily operational work of traffic maintenance personnel.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Prepares vehicle and materials for installation or repair. Visits job sites to ensure area is barricaded properly and safely. Sets up safety equipment. Removes damaged signs and posts. Sets up temporary signage. Measures and marks blue stake areas. Installs new signs and posts. 

Fabricates street signs by entering information into the computer for printing. Applies sign face to metal surfaces. Performs silk-screening, punching, drilling, and sign assembly.

Maintains daily activities records by logging job assignments, materials used, mileage and traveled time spent, and entering data into the computer. Repairs mechanical equipment, and contacts vendors, suppliers, and specialty stores for materials. Quality control of data entered by Traffic Control Technicians

Reviews workloads, assigns work and coaches employees with specialized instructions and practices for job accomplishments. Contributes to other employees' performance evaluations. Assists with the hiring process by interviewing and making recommendations and providing input to supervisory staff.

Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

 

Working Conditions

Monday-Friday 6:00 AM-2:30 PM. Alternate work schedule may be considered. May be required to work on-call shifts to include nights and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Six (6) months post high school
Work Experience: Two (2) years of directly related experience

Preferred Qualifications  
Experience in fabricating, installing, and repairing street signs.

• 50 lb. Lift Test
• Must possess a valid and unrestricted Driver License Class D

The following certifications must be obtained within six (6) months of hire and must be maintained throughout employment in this position: 

Forklift operator certification 
International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs and Pavement Markings Technician I Certification 
IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician Certification
