We are seeking an Ion Trap Top Metal Designer in our Broomfield, CO or Golden Valley, MN locations.
Quantinuum is seeking a highly qualified Ion Trap Designer to apply their expertise to cutting-edge R&D problems in the field of quantum computing. The ideal candidate will have experience in designing surface-electrode ion traps using electrostatic simulation and numerical optimization. In this role, you will design the RF and control electrodes for novel trap architectures, closely collaborating with quantum circuit compiler, quantum computer architecture, and microfabrication teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design surface-electrode ion traps for QCCD-architecture quantum computers
- Perform trade and feasibility studies of forward-looking trap architectures
- Collaborate with other functions such as system architecture and quantum circuit compiler team to determine trap concept-of-operations and optimal design strategies
- Partner with the trap fabrication team to design optimal sub-surface structures that facilitate trap operation
- Develop and define scientific and technical processes driving technical advancement
YOU MUST HAVE:
- Master’s Degree minimum
- Minimum 2+ years of experience applying physical principles to inform numerical optimization
- Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
- Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. person (defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status)
WE VALUE:
- PhD in a related physics or engineering field
- 2+ years of experience designing surface-electrode ion traps using electrostatic simulation and optimization
- Experience with numerical optimization techniques, such as convex optimization, genetic algorithms, or optimal control theory
- Experience with numerical modeling of physical systems, demonstrating original approaches and a deep understanding of underlying details
- Experience with multi-species ion trapping, ion transport waveform generation, or novel ion transport methods
- Ability to successfully tackle large, complex problems through systematic problem-solving approaches
- Courage to challenge the technical status quo, seeking fundamental, well-understood solutions to physical problems
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Python, Julia, or C
- Experience with configuring and analyzing BEM and/or FEM models
- Experience using HPC clusters, GPUs, or other parallel computing techniques
- A history of public-facing work such as journal articles, patents, open-source repositories, or conference presentations
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills

Estimated total wage: $129,000 – $155,000
