Working in the UPS Data Center was a starkly new experience - rarely is one thrust into such a vast operation and given such a wide perspective on it as an intern. Every day my perspective of the operation widened.

Human Resources Intern
May 2018 • Atlanta, GA
What I liked
My internship has exposed me to the corporate setting and has enhanced my networking, presentation, and analytical skills. I started my internship as a shy, quiet person. Attending mixers, networking events, and corporate service projects helped me to become comfortable and more confident in myself as a professional.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had been able to shadow different business units and professionals within HR and Marketing. Because I was working on a lot of projects for my team, I wasn't able to explore other areas of UPS and discover which business units I may be interested in.
Advice
Meet as many people as you can! UPS has over 400,000 employees, globally. There are so many opportunities to get involved! Joining a Business Resource Group (BRG) will build your network as well as volunteering for the various service projects offered throughout the year.

What I liked
Everyone was very helpful to acclimate to the work. My peers noticed what I brought to the table and frequently asked me for advice.
What I wish was different
I wish i worked with more departments to get a wider understanding versus just working in my department within HR.
Advice
When networking, ask yourself “How can I help this person one day”. Being selfless will take you a long way versus just asking for help.

I liked working with a people whom I really enjoyed being with to accomplish a tough task of making our number in a set amount of time.

I wish the overall atmosphere was better, i.e. the physical and culture. The warehouse conditions were tough to adjust to and many people acted very negatively which was hard to work through.

What I liked
Early hours made it so I could work my other job during the day or if I had the day off I could do whatever I wanted. I also had a lot of friends working there and it was an informal environment so that was a lot of fun. Lots of physical labor
What I wish was different
The hours. I didnt like them but I also liked them at the same time.
Advice
Attitude is everything. It is difficult to make yourself get up that early every day and once you get there it is difficult to have a good attitude, but when you discipline yourself to have a positive attitude about your job and what youre doing it makes it much more enjoyable

What I liked
Very friendly and welcoming. HR tried to make sure there were plenty of networking events in order to meet people outside of your department. There was always work to do and plenty of skills to learn.
What I wish was different
I wish I lived closer to the location as my daily commute could be 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic
Advice
Be sure to attend all the events and engage with as many people as you can even if you have no intent of staying with the company.

What I liked
I enjoyed the week training courses that all part-time employees were required to attend learning about the various symbols stamped on various boxes, and how to properly hydrate in the hot warehouse environment.
What I wish was different
If I did not live so far from the actual location to commute to work.
Advice
Working for UPS-DFW Airport, it is important that you buy sturdy boots to protect your ankles, drink lots of water, Powerade, eat a big breakfast and, get lots of sleep especially you work the sunrise shift at 3am. The job is rewarding after you have loaded and unloaded a full trailer of packages that go in cans to be delivered by plane, truck, or mailman. You also feel refreshed in a way sweating getting in a good exercise bending and toning your arms picking up the 70lbs boxes.

Industrial Engineering Intern
July - September 2018 • Sacramento, CA
What I liked
UPS never treated us like interns; from day 1, we were teammates and respected as such.
What I wish was different
I wish we could have had some sort of immersion week where we could learn all the practices/processes, abbreviations, and protocols before we dove straight into work. It would've made our tasks run way more efficiently.
Advice
Imagine yourself in a full-time position. An increased level of seriousness will make you passionate about the work you do.

What I liked
My management and the partnership evident in my department. UPS is full of some incredibly talented and capable people and there is much camaraderie among different departments and workgroups.
What I wish was different
My experience was not a good reflection of everyone in the company -- satisfaction with the job is very much dependent on who your immediate management team is at the time of employment. Sometimes the hours expectation
